Leadership Update: New Chair for the UK Optical Suppliers Association (OSA)

Millmead Optical Group has announced that CEO James Conway has been appointed Chair of the Optical Suppliers Association (OSA), the UK’s leading trade body for optical manufacturers and suppliers. The appointment was confirmed at the OSA’s Annual General Meeting which took place on 5th December 2025. If you were keeping up with MGAM on social media, you may have seen some social posts about it as I was there to witness the moment.

About the OSA: Supporting the UK Optical Industry

Established in 1917, the Optical Suppliers Association (OSA) represents a broad spectrum of the UK optical supply chain. Its membership base includes spectacle and contact lens manufacturers, eyewear frame and accessory suppliers, as well as providers of ophthalmic instruments and equipment. The OSA is known for offering regulatory guidance, facilitating networking, and driving industry standards, while also fostering collaboration with key organisations within the optical sector. It really is an association that connect all areas of the sector together.

James Conway’s Ongoing Commitment to the Optical Supply Sector

James Conway is no stranger to the OSA, having played an active role within the association for many years especially, for the frame sector and has put in several of its strategic initiatives in place. Notably, he has championed the OSA Green Charter and promoting sustainability across the supply chain plus,  supported the DICOM digital interoperability programme, which is shaping the future of integrated eye care in the UK. His appointment as Chair recognises both his dedication and leadership within the optical industry.

A Vision for the Future: James Conway’s Statement

On his appointment, James Conway commented:

“It is an honour to take on the role of Chair of the OSA. The association plays a vital role in supporting and representing our industry, from regulatory guidance to sustainability initiatives. I look forward to working with members and partner organisations to continue strengthening the voice of the optical supply sector.”

Editor’s note: I have personally known James Conway for many years, and his insights into the optical industry have been invaluable to me, for which I am forever grateful. I am excited to see how his leadership will shape the future of the OSA, as he is so passionate about the sector and always full of innovative ideas. This is also a historic moment for the OSA, James Conway and Jayne Abel (CEO of EyeSpace) have become the first chair and co-chair from the eyewear side of the industry. Previously, this role in the association has predominantly been held by individuals from either lens or machinery backgrounds.
