Italian Eyewear Industry News: ANFAO Sets the Agenda for 2026
Belluno, 11 December 2025 — The Italian Optical Goods Manufacturers’ Association (ANFAO) gathered at Palazzo Crepadona to discuss the evolving landscape of the Italian eyewear industry. As the world’s largest optical trade show, MIDO, approaches, industry professionals are focused on how Italian eyewear brands can maintain their unique identity while competing on the global stage.
Italian Eyewear: Global Expansion and Market Leadership
Internationalisation and Export Growth
ANFAO is prioritising the internationalisation of Italian eyewear, working closely with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) to promote “Made in Italy” eyewear products worldwide. Recent initiatives include Italian eyewear exhibitions in Japan, UAE, Brazil, India, Paris, and Istanbul. Upcoming events like IEE Milano (Jan 30), IEE New York (Mar 4), and IEE Paris (Sep 25) are set to showcase Italian optical innovation and craftsmanship to international buyers and distributors.
Sustainability and ESG in Eyewear Manufacturing
Sustainability is a growing trend in the optical industry. ANFAO, together with Deloitte, is offering free ESG and sustainability training for small and medium-sized eyewear manufacturers. Plans for 2026 include advanced training on sustainable supply chains, energy transition incentives, and integrating ESG principles into business operations. The association is also working to establish CSE Certification as a European standard for sustainable eyewear.
Eyewear Technology: Innovation and Digital Transformation
ANFAO is launching new initiatives to support eyewear companies in digital transformation, including the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), process digitalisation, and advanced production models. These projects aim to keep Italian eyewear brands at the forefront of optical technology and innovation.
Diversity, Culture, and Training in the Optical Sector
Inclusion and Attracting Young Talent
The “Walk the Talk” program focuses on inclusive workplace practices within the eyewear sector. Next year, ANFAO will emphasise attracting young professionals, fostering diversity, and building a positive business ecosystem for the next generation of optical industry leaders.
Promoting Eyewear Culture and Heritage
The “Lens of Time” exhibition, celebrating Italian eyewear history and design, is currently at the M9 Museum in Mestre and will feature at MIDO 2026. This project highlights the cultural significance and innovation of Italian eyewear brands.
Training and Education for Eyewear Professionals
ANFAO supports advanced training for optical professionals, including the Copernico 2.0 platform for AI-driven personalised courses and export-management programs in partnership with LUISS Business School. These initiatives are designed to elevate skills and knowledge across the Italian eyewear industry.
Collaboration with Medical Professionals
ANFAO continues to bridge the gap between opticians and healthcare professionals through projects like Eyevolution and tele-reporting protocols, enhancing patient care and professional collaboration in the optical sector.
Italian Eyewear Exports: Market Trends and Outlook
Despite challenges in the US market, Italian eyewear exports are growing in France, Spain, and Eastern Europe. The industry’s focus on quality, reputation, and innovation remains key to international success.
