Level Up Your Eyes: The Launch of XP-Pro Eyewear for Gamers – MyGlassesAndMe

I’ve been waiting for this moment to share this blog post, and now, after over 18 months of waiting, the time has finally come! What’s the exciting news? The big secret is that I’ve been working on an eyewear project specifically designed for the gaming market!

The Spark: Discovering XP-Pro Lenses

In 2023, I wrote an article about a lens called XP-Pro, designed to alleviate eyestrain and fatigue for gamers. Intrigued from the start, my husband, who is a keen gamer, and I decided to put them to the test. We were instantly impressed, experiencing significant relief from eyestrain and enjoying a newfound sense of restfulness and reduced fatigue in our eyes.

From that moment on, my husband and I became completely hooked, leading me to write an article about them for my editor at NZOptics. She was equally intrigued, particularly since she has older teenage children who love to game too.

Turning an Idea Into Reality

By Christmas 2024, an idea came to us because we wanted everyone to experience what we have experienced: although the lenses weren’t widely discussed in the optical industry, how many gamers actually visit their opticians to report eye strain from gaming? Sure, people might complain about prolonged computer use for work, but gaming is a different story. Furthermore, gaming lenses should ideally be paired with frames specifically designed for that purpose. It simply doesn’t make sense to go to an optician for gaming lenses and then choose a random frame to go with them.

Partnering Up and Building the Collection

I saw an opportunity, so I contacted the company that produces the lenses and negotiated a partnership. After months of dedication and getting my husband (who is passionate about gaming) onboard with this venture, I am thrilled to announce today the launch of XP-Pro Eyewear! This exciting collection is perfect for all gaming enthusiasts. Your eyes are crucial for seeing while you play, so it’s important to protect and maintain them.

Designing for Gamers, by Gamers

Designing the frame was an intense experience, especially given my background as an optical journalist. I’ve reviewed countless collections and criticised many, but now it’s my chance to present a cohesive line that resonates with gamers. While I’m not a hardcore gamer myself, I’ve worked on it with my husband and sought expert guidance on glasses design as I know how in-depth the process is.

I was determined to create a collection that stood out; I didn’t want to simply select generic glasses shapes and add lenses. Each frame needed to be recognisable, so each frame contained some subtle bevels, angular edges and colours that resonated with gamers. Hopefully, in the future when people see those design details, they know it is an XP-Pro Eyewear immediately.

What I Learned About Eyewear Design

I’ve also gained a new respect for glasses designers; their job is challenging as they strive to make glasses that fit most people well. After months of going back and forth regarding nose fitting, temple lengths and angles, I realised that achieving the perfect fit for everyone is nearly impossible. In the end, we decided to go for the average sizing metric.

A Personal Journey: Balancing Work, Family, and Passion

If you have been following MyGlassesAndMe (MGAM) since day one then I hope you know my love for eyewear runs deep. I am feeling excited and nervous all at the same time as I know I cannot please everyone but for the first collection, I certainly did my best and feel proud of each frame. It hasn’t been an easy journey as my husband and myself still had our regular jobs to balance because we need to put food on the table and a roof over our heads whilst being parents to our two young daughters. There have been many late nights working on this project and sleepless nights over nose fitting and worrying if we made the right decision. Many friends and family asked do we hate each other yet, ha!
